What are the best data science resources

Hey Reader,

Let me cut to the chase.

You clicked this email because you want to know the best resources for studying data science.

Well, like Sergio Agüero scoring the last-minute winner against QPR in 2012 to win Man City their first-ever Premier League title, let me deliver.

The amount of books, courses and guides on data science has exploded over the last few years.

Some of them are good, and some of them are dogwater.

So, how does a beginner decipher what is what?

The truth is, there is no “best” resource.

It’s like asking what would have happened if Agüero didn’t score that last minute winner. We can speculate all we want, but ultimately it's impossible to come to a decision.

It’s the same with data science courses: we can speculate, research, and ask virile handsome noble practitioners in the field like myself for recommendations.

But you will never reach your goal of finding the “best”.

The “best” doesn’t exist, and in fact, looking for it is simply a form of procrastination.

Sure, some teachers may suit your learning style a bit better, but the time it takes to look for that extra 0.1% of teaching quality is better spent simply learning.

Imagine if you spent all that time looking for the “best” course actually studying material.

You would be way further ahead.

Any course or resources from popular providers like Coursera, DataCamp, Zero to Mastery, 365DataScience, O’reilly or any book written by a leading researcher is more than good enough for anything you want to learn.

A mantra I tell my coaching clients all the time is:

"The best course is the one you take and finish."

I know.

Groundbreaking.

So, stop doomscrolling Reddit and YouTube, looking for that ideal course.

The next one you see is the one you are taking.

Speak soon,
Egor

PS: I have some very exciting news!

In the next couple of weeks, I am officially launching the Data Science Launchpad. A programme designed to land you your dream data science job in just 90 days. This cohort is highly exclusive: I am strictly limiting the founding group to only 6 students.

This means personalised coaching, rapid results and working with me on an almost daily basis. You can join the priority waitlist here to ensure you are instantly notified and secure a spot when it goes live!

PPS: For those of you are unfamiliar with premier league lore, this Sergio Agüero thing I referred to is summarised by Gemini below:

"The match was the dramatic conclusion to the 2011-2012 Premier League season, where Manchester City had to defeat Queens Park Rangers (QPR) to win the title on goal difference over rivals Manchester United. Despite going 1-0 up, City conceded two goals (one after QPR's Joey Barton was sent off) to trail 2-1 deep into stoppage time, seemingly handing the trophy to United. City scored a vital equalizer in the 92nd minute via Edin Džeko, but still needed a winner. In the 94th minute, Sergio Agüero scored a legendary, last-gasp goal to make it 3-2, securing Manchester City's first league title in 44 years in the most thrilling finale in Premier League history."

For you Americans, it's very similar to Jordan Game 6.

Hey Reader, The other day, a coaching client asked me: "When should I start applying for jobs, I still don't feel I have learned enough?" I get it. The last thing you want to be is sitting like a lemon when the interviewer asks you what linear regression is. Trust me. I've been there. Your hands go sweaty knees weak arms are heavy, you try to rattle your brain for an answer and you feel like a fraud. Maybe not Bernie Madoff running a $65 billion Ponzi scheme-level of fraud, but it's close...

Hey Reader, Let me be upfront with you. I have some correct controversial opinions: I don't think AI is "that" great, and it won't replace data scientists Logistic regression is a regression, not a classification algorithm Lord of the Rings is absolute dogwater (and yes, I have read the books) There is one more view that I have (don't worry, it's not LOTR-related for you die-hards here). I don't see why people care more about their Instagram profile than their LinkedIn page. Think about it...

Hey Reader I am going to be honest with you. Most resumes suck. I've reviewed well over 100 resumes at this point, and it still surprises me how very intelligent people really struggle to craft a decent one. No matter how good your grades are, or how many internships you had or even if you created a robot dog that can walk up walls, none of it matters if your resume is dogwater (pardon the pun). I want to tell you the one most important thing candidates don't do, but it's something recruiters...
