Why LinkedIn is your best friend

Hey Reader,

Let me be upfront with you.

I have some correct controversial opinions:

  • I don't think AI is "that" great, and it won't replace data scientists
  • Logistic regression is a regression, not a classification algorithm
  • Lord of the Rings is absolute dogwater (and yes, I have read the books)

There is one more view that I have (don't worry, it's not LOTR-related for you die-hards here).

I don't see why people care more about their Instagram profile than their LinkedIn page.

Think about it for a second.

For the vast majority of people, Instagram does literally nothing to improve their life or career.

But now think about LinkedIn.

If you focus on building out your page and posting relevant content, imagine how many more potential opportunities and connections will come your way.

The ROI on your life is so much higher on LinkedIn than on Instagram.

Apart from my first data science job, every other job I have got came from a recruiter or talent partner reaching out to me via LinkedIn.

If my profile wasn't active, I highly doubt this would have happened.

Ok, but what does a "good" LinkedIn profile look like?

Well, let me guide you as if I were Gandalf and you are my fellowship:

  • Network - Connect with 10-50 people each week at target companies
  • Consistency - Ensure that your LinkedIn profile matches your Resume
  • Aesthetic - Populate every section of your profile, especially photos and your banner
  • Headline - I beg you, don't say you are an "aspiring" data scientist, just say "data scientist"
  • Featured - Add your GitHub, portfolio, projects, etc.
  • About - 1 to 3 sentences summarising you, whatever you do, don't write long paragraphs
  • Experience - Max 5 bullet points that are 1-3 sentences long summarising your key impact
  • Education - Grade, if it's good, and anything else you accomplished while at school
  • Skills - Add all the skills you have to hit the keyword match

There is so much more to go into, like posting, but this is a good starting point for most people.

So, my challenge to you is that instead of spending that time on Instagram, dedicate it to improving your LinkedIn profile.

After you have completed these updates, send me your profile, and I will gladly provide some feedback.

Speak soon,
Egor

PS: If you want to feedback on your LinkedIn profile, feel free to book a call with me here.

PPS: All love to the LOTR fans out there, but if I had to rate some famous fantasy series in order, this is my list.

  1. Game of Thrones / ASOIAF - GOATED
  2. Harry Potter - Simply a classic
  3. Narnia - Have a soft spot for this one
  4. LOTR - I have to say it again, dogwater

** This is strictly referring to the books. Don't ask me about Game of Thrones TV ending, that is truly Pandora's box.

Hey Reader, The other day, a coaching client asked me: "When should I start applying for jobs, I still don't feel I have learned enough?" I get it. The last thing you want to be is sitting like a lemon when the interviewer asks you what linear regression is. Trust me. I've been there. Your hands go sweaty knees weak arms are heavy, you try to rattle your brain for an answer and you feel like a fraud. Maybe not Bernie Madoff running a $65 billion Ponzi scheme-level of fraud, but it's close...

Hey Reader, Let me cut to the chase. You clicked this email because you want to know the best resources for studying data science. Well, like Sergio Agüero scoring the last-minute winner against QPR in 2012 to win Man City their first-ever Premier League title, let me deliver. The amount of books, courses and guides on data science has exploded over the last few years. Some of them are good, and some of them are dogwater. So, how does a beginner decipher what is what? The truth is, there is...

Hey Reader I am going to be honest with you. Most resumes suck. I've reviewed well over 100 resumes at this point, and it still surprises me how very intelligent people really struggle to craft a decent one. No matter how good your grades are, or how many internships you had or even if you created a robot dog that can walk up walls, none of it matters if your resume is dogwater (pardon the pun). I want to tell you the one most important thing candidates don't do, but it's something recruiters...
